Downtown Bellingham’s Arts District is an ever changing place. Located just off the city’s redeveloping waterfront, it pulses with energy and activity.
The Whatcom Museum and Mount Baker Theatre have long brought fine art, music, artifacts and theater into the lives of residents and visitors. Thousands of children from throughout Whatcom County visit the Arts District each year, on school field trips and family outings. They enjoy live performances, learn about local history and explore their imaginations.
The Museum and Theatre are joined by the Bellingham Public Library, American Museum of Radio and Electricity, Pickford Film Center, restaurants, galleries, shops and many others, bringing added texture, richness and creativity to the Arts District experience.
Today, Arts District supporters are in the midst of creating an exciting future, one that we can all enjoy.
Arts District - An Exciting Future
Signature elements of the Arts District are changing:
Infrastructure upgrades to the Mount Baker Theatre and expansion of the Whatcom Museum's facilities (including new homes for fine art and children’s exhibits) are underway.
The Library is preparing for a bond issue to build a new, larger facility to meet the extraordinary level of community demand.
The Whatcom Film Association (Pickford Film Center) is raising funds to renovate its new home. The expansion will add a screen and allow them to offer hands-on filmmaking classes among other new programs.
Improvements are also underway at the American Museum of Radio and Electricity, and will result in remarkable new exhibits and a new Science Education Center.
And, planned improvements to the on-street environment will make the Arts District even more vibrant.
These separate ventures combine to function as an Arts District partnership. They are a blend of large and small, history and innovation, private and public, reflection and imagination, traditional and trail blazing. Together they are a force for reinventing this already lively hub of activity, artistry and commerce.
